Airlines maintaining or increasing flights frequency to Málaga, and the success of the Madrid to Málaga fast train boosting domestic tourism, will help Spain's Costa del Sol stay a top destination in 2009.
In times of uncertainty, tourists tend to make lower-budget trips, especially by saving on transportation; this benefits short-distance travel destinations - like the Costa del Sol
Ana Gómez, Managing Director, Costa del Sol Tourist Board
Ana Gómez, managing director of the Costa del Sol Tourist Board, said despite the financial downturn, these were positives in the destination's favour.
Accessibility is key to enable "a constant flow of travellers" and "most airlines offering direct flights to Málaga are either keeping or increasing their flights' frequency over the next few months."
Guy Mantel, Director, Club Operations and Travel for Club La Costa Resorts & Hotels said he was pleased the airlines were showing their faith in the destination, "which continues to be extremely popular with our members throughout the whole year".
Despite the fall in the comparative purchasing power of the pound, visitors to the Costa del Sol will still enjoy low prices and excellent offers in restaurants and bars, to enable their holiday spend to stretch further.
"On our resorts, we have food and beverage money-saving offers that vary throughout the year and have been developed to allow our members and clients to fully enjoy these facilities. At the same time, families can self-cater should they wish."
The offer of almost guaranteed sunshine and a short haul, cost effective flight will prove a winning combination, as always, for Spain's most popular Costa.
"In times of uncertainty, tourists tend to make lower-budget trips, especially by saving on transportation; this benefits short-distance travel destinations - like the Costa del Sol - for European tourists," said Ms Gómez.
According to the World Tourism Organisation and Association of Spanish Hoteliers, luxury travellers will keep their share in the market, and 60 per cent of hotel beds in Málaga province correspond to four- and five-star.
