Club La Costa member cycles through France and Italy for urgent bone marrow appeal.
A Club La Costa member is cycling 475km from Nice in France to Pisa in Italy to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust cancer charity in the UK.
Nick Day, who has already become known as “The man on the bike”, responded to an urgent Club La Costa appeal for bone marrow donors back in July, and at the same time decided to undertake his marathon road trip to raise cash for the charity.
Club La Costa published the appeal on behalf of some Paradise Club members desperate for bone marrow donors for their 22-year-old son Mickaël, who urgently needs a transplant. Unfortunately, no-one in Mickaël’s family is compatible, so the appeal became all the more important.
An email shot was also sent to members urging them to approach bone marrow agencies in the UK to check out their compatibility, and happily several positive responses were received.
However, it was Nick’s superb effort that really caught the attention. He said, “Whether or not I will be a compatible donor for Mickaël, only time will tell. I truly hope I am, but either way, I know the money I hope to raise will help a little.”
Starting out on 9th September, Nick will be joined on his epic journey by 11 other cyclists, all representing UK charities, and his wife, who will be driving the group’s support vehicle carrying essential supplies, cycle spares and luggage. The group plans to arrive in Pisa on 12th September, having cycled 120km each day.
Club La Costa has already got Nick’s sponsorship fund off to a flying start with a £500 donation. He was at a family wedding in Aberdeen when he heard the good news and said, “To be honest, I’m a bit shocked, but absolutely over the moon. What a great start to the campaign. Thank you so much.”
